Finally, he's diaper free!

Some of our closest relatives and friends have been asking why we didn't potty train Adam earlier as he's going to attend his pre-school next year. Some might give us tips to stop him from wearing the diaper and so on. Our reason was simple 'he's not ready'. Though he's technically 4 years old but he's younger as he was born on late December.

I have seen one of my nieces who was potty trained as early as 2 years old defecated on her mom's bed! From there, I know I must wait for the right time or until he's ready.

At the age of 3 years and 8 months, he finally stopped his diaper since last weekend. I have underestimated his ability to do so as he passes his urine in a large quantity everyday. I thought Mastura was a lot easier when she showed several signs that she didn't want to wear the diaper anymore. Like she dried all the night.

To my surprise, Adam could make it within the 1st 2 days! He didn't hide like most of children do for the first one week when he wanted to pee or defecate. He just asked us or his sister to bring him to the toilet. Indeed, for first few hours it was a bit difficult.

He peed in his pant but the quantity was little, even we couldn't find any drop on the floor. Like he suddenly realized that he wasn't wearing the diaper anymore. There was only one night he suddenly awoke. Seemed like he wanted to tell me something but he was silent. I haven't asked him anything too. The next thing I knew, he peed on the cushion.

Now he doesn't come to us anymore to bring him to the toilet. Instead, he just goes there straight away.

How to Know When to Potty Train a Toddler

Don't push your toddler to potty train until he or she is ready - the age can range from 18 months to 3 years.

Instructions:

Step 1 - Look for signs of readiness including staying dry for at least 2 hours during the day, asking to wear "big-kid" underwear, having regular bowel movements, or indicating through facial gestures that he or she is about to go potty.

Step 2 - Talk to toddler about using the potty. Choose words to describe body parts, urination and bowel movements, while avoiding words that may be offensive to others or embarrassing to your child.

Step 3 - Show toddler how to use the potty and to wipe and wash hands.

Step 4 - Encourage toddler to tell you when he or she wants to go potty.

Step 5 - Reward your toddler for a job well done.

Tips & Warnings:

1) Have patience - remember, potty training takes time. Give your toddler a lot of love, support and praise.

2) Show appreciation by giving a sticker each time your toddler goes on the big potty.

3) Purchase disposable pull-up trainers or cotton training pants.

4) Don't discourage your toddler from sitting on the potty because of time constraints.

5) Accidents are common - never punish your child for them.

6) Since constipation is common during potty training, give your toddler a balanced, fiber-rich diet.

Syafiah's first few words...

She loves to talk a lot and loudly. Her mood is always good even when she suddenly wakes up in the middle of the night, she would play and talk until she falls asleep again. I noticed few words she always says recently:

"Enggak" ('No' in Indonesian slang) *entah mana la dia belajar. It must be from our gene.. ahaks*
"Kak" ('Sister')
"Ayah" ('Daddy')

I'm waiting for the moment she will call me, "Ibu...". Last night, my husband gently taught her to pronounce it. I don't mind how long it'll take as even Mastura once called me "Abu" for a long time.

Even though there's no major improvement on her movement, only she could turn left and right quickly, plus sits with assistance with her head not fully straight up, her achievement in other things makes me proud too. Thank God.

I always talk to her whenever she wants to fall asleep that I trust her, that she will do different things. That she can do most of us can do in life. I believe that our loves, our touches and a good communication will stimulate her brain. And she proved to me that from time to time she's definitely a good child and a good listener.

One of her hobbies - garu anggota badan termasuk hidung dengan khusyuk sekali. Pastu jari tadi masuk mulut. Yikes! Bad habit...

Sleeping beauty. Keletihan selepas pulang dari occupational therapy (terapi cara kerja). Hari ni kena kerja keras sket kata ayah. Dan yang best kata ayahnya lagi dia cuba untuk angkat kepalanya walau pun hati hiba sampai menangis-nangis. Hahaha... Ruginya daku tak dapat rakam/shoot gambar time tu. So, I asked my husband to change the next appointment to afternoon so that I could tag along.

Oh.. dia sebenarnya tengah pijak embun di atas rumput di waktu subuh. The best thing about her is she wakes up very early in every morning. Dan lagi, semasa melakukannya dia tidak mengangkat kakinya.

Sensory Skills are simply the 5 senses of our body that most everyone has been blessed in having. These senses allow us to see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. Some people believe there is a sixth sense. However, except for the movie "The Sixth Sense", this sense is not recognized as being official so that won't be a part of this article. Let us not "see dead people." J Getting back to reality. these five senses develop mainly in our much younger years. Therefore, it is good for you (parent, grand parent, etc.) who has some connection with children to be aware of the child's senses development when seeking out toys, games and activities to enhance playtime.

Your child's sensory development can be encouraged by the stimuli you surround the child with. For seeing, it could be a crib mobile in the first months of life. For hearing it could be a music box played within the child's room at bed time. For touch, you might place a small furry toy in the crib for your baby to grasp and feel. For taste, .well your baby will want to put about everything in his/her mouth. For smell, you might have your child in the kitchen to smell all the aromas while the meal is cooked.

Every sense can be helped a little through the activities and "educational" toys you select for your child. Some will be more of benefit than others. As a young child, toys with different textures are always good for touch. Many times it seems that a baby can run her/his hands on a textured toy for a very long time before acclimation sets in. For hearing, your child will soon yearn to see how practically everything sounds when banged against another.

Later, she had her breakfast and bathed. Around 9.45 am, went to DEMC. She got her 1 1/2 years jab yesterday. Vaccine for hib meningitis, diphteria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus and poliomyelitis (polio).

Her pediatrician suggested PediaSure to increase her weight. Her weight is static at 7.35 kg, which is so underweight even though she eats and drinks her current milk a lot. Hari ni nak survey harga but I know it'll be definitely sangat mahal la. Anything for you, dear daughter!

Ikut dia, semua susu dia sebat je, tak kiralah BM atau FM. Kalau berat badan lambat naik camne la nak lakukan pergerakan yang lain - nak duduk, meniarap, etc. Potensinya sangat besar. Saiz kepala takleh turun dah. Menanti berat naik bagai menantikan si kura² yang berjalan. Oh, bab ni takleh la cakap biar lambat pun tak pe cam cite kura² dan arnab tu. Lambat karang tulang dia makin keras, tapi dia masih tak mampu buat apa². Definitely, we need to do something about it.

"Sengal la gusi ni, ibu"

She was playing all day long again yesterday. From the time she returned home until the night came. She improved a lot on turn on side skills. Kiri-kanan, kiri-kanan.. lama² dah tak dok atas tilam lagi dah.

Her 7th tooth was out yesterday..

It was canine@cuspid on her right side. I could see another 3 teeth on the way to come out. They are both lateral incisors and a canine too. No photos as it is so hard to ask her to open her mouth. *Baiknye anak mak, demam pun idak*

No wonder she has always bitten her fingers. I want to sooth them by teether, unfortunately, she couldn't hold it. The layout is not that good but better wait till she grows older when she has her permanent teeth.







p.s. : One of my junior is taking an A-level to pursue her dream to be a dentist. Even uncle A's girlfriend is a dentist and promised us for FOC family dental treatment. Perhaps one day, I'll meet and ask them to make correction on Syafiah's teeth.

A little update on Syafiah...

1- My husband and I always call her Kak Teh. Reasons - because she is PUTIH and she is the number 3rd. Kak? Hahaha.. harapan untuk ada adik lagi la tu.

2- She could pull out her HO. So how am I going to put it again on her hand?



3- There's a day, she was overslept. She didn't fell asleep during the day (play, terajang², hentak² mainan, etc.). Came the night she was very cranky. I guess she had a headache. After consuming a bottle of milk, I began to pat on her rear. She whimpered several times until she fell asleep. Reason she couldn't sleep that whole day was she was so sensitive towards the sounds and the lights. Her siblings were making a lot of noises.

And I have no choice but to do this:

Don't disturb me! Leave me alone... Kalau tak buat camni alamat susah la dia nak tido. Dah pandai demand dah sekarang ni. Lambat sikit pun dah pandai merengek!

4- She has this attitude of when I'm far, she'd make noise, sounds like she was calling me. Whenever I'm near, she'll be quiet or sometimes she'll smile or giggle. Pastu ajak main. Malam ni je 'gelak tanpa bunyi' je kerja dia. Pastu kaki dua² belah angkat tinggi² sambil sepak², dengan tangan pun aktif benar bergeraknya. Usually she'll doze off early, but last night it's a bit late due to the nap she had around 7pm - 10pm.

5- She could roll over to the right side (it's left before) and she could lift her butt easily.

6- If she's exhausted or refused to play (for example, we tickle her), she'd quickly turn herself to the left. Macam nak bagitahu.. tak nak la... saya penat ni.. aahhhhh!







p/s : She'll have a 3-months-basis appointment with neuro this coming 07/07/09.

My name is Syafiah. Syafiah only.. no more, no less. My parents don't prefer to put 2 or 3 names as for them, it is easier to call us by one name. Mom always say 1 simple name is better. Simpe to pronounce, as it has meaning, so that the meaning will be a prayer. Ibu and ayah are so fussy about the makhraj too, especially ayah as he's from a religious school. That's why, ibu and ayah live a simple life because they would like everything about their lives to be simple. However some people especially our relatives love to call our name Tura, Tora (nasib baik bukan Dorayaki or Doraemon), Dam or Badam, and as for me - Pia or Piah or even Tapiah (sudah pendek nak pendek lagi.. sabo je la).

Mom has created this can-be-updated chart as a record and not for comparison. So that we could access to it in future. She always says that every child is a bless and unique in his/her own way. Mom also learnt to make the table from this web (you could use the generator if you want). I think mom is crazy... crazy in 'godeking' the HTML code and learns new thing. But why on earth the table is far down there? She couldn't answer... and still searching for an answer.

Ibu and ayah always keep on bullying me! Mastura is a good sister. She loves to play with me and makes me giggle. Look at my head. It's still bigger.. manyak susah lo mau kasi balance dengan badan... but I've a very good appetite now! Hope I can control it much easier.

Even though there's a slight decrease in her weight, Syafiah is eager to eat solid food now. 6 scoops of Nestum/4-5 table spoons of porridge per feeding about 3 times a day. As a result, she would vomit everytime she consumed a lot of water previouslty. Now, I could see that her behavior turns drastically that we could increase her intake gradually.
