Update on them..

Syafiah looks cuter and chubbier, sitting on her high chair like a princess. She's a lot happier after the born of her brother.

And even look prettier too.

Bald and beautiful Zaid. Oops!

Zaid and his dad at DEMC for his 1-month-old jab on May 9, 2011. His weight at that moment was 5 kg.

My other half with his children. Syafiah was trying to sleep, Zaid was pretty excited as he could follow objects briefly with his eyes, Mastura was excited to be photographed with the family members, Adam was looking somewhere else.

Yeah, life is pretty hectic with additional son but FUN! :)

Sekadar renungan...

Bak kata Ustaz Hasrizal:-

Bentangkan sejadah.

Dia Teman sejatimu...

Wordless Monday

Mastura, Adam, Syafiah & Zaid. Mastura was and still having a fever, whilst Syafiah was actually sleeping when I was snapping this picture.

Update on Syafiah

Lama tak update kan. Hari ni cukup 66 hari. Berapa hari dah tu. Merajuk ke? Tak de la. Saya memang malas nak menaip panjang-panjang ni.

A quick update on Syafiah:

There's one thing happened to her last week, specifically on Thursday morning. Something which never happened before. It looks like a mild seizure and happened only once. My husband brought her down to bathe early in the morning. This was his routine within last week. Not long after my husband went to work, while consuming her milk, her body became stiff and her eyes seemed to be twitching involuntarily. It last for few seconds, then it stopped and she dozed off.

Knowing that it could be a sign of seizure, we brought her to her neurologist the next morning. He claimed that she might be exhausted or her shunt is working under level (suboptimal). He asked us to go back and monitor her for a week, and then go back to him. She was indeed exhausted with less sleep, more time playing and exercising. Next neuro appointment ~ 18th January 2011. Just to report on the progress. Or else she'd be admitted in the hospital.

A friend said she might be shocked because of the new routine. So, we tried not to bathe her as usual. Seems like it's working until today. Perhaps, her sleep was disturbed and her mind wasn't ready to wake up, wallahu'alam. Sometimes it's like I want to dig to know what happened inside her brain.

Happy birthday...

It's my darling birthday today. The 30th. When asked on what he likes on his birthday, he said, "Nothing". A very typical HIM. I knew he meant it. How I wish I could travel alone with him without kids to the east side of the country by train. Just be the backpackers. Most likely for an unplanned trip. That would be a perfect birthday and even an anniversary gift. When? I don't know yet.

Him yesterday at Taman Pertanian Malaysia, Bukit Cahaya Seri Alam, Shah Alam, Selangor:

I see so much LOVE between a daddy and his daughter in this picture.

To my darling, thank you for being there for me in time of up and down. Thank you for being a super spouse and super parent indeed!

Kenangan anak-anak semasa kecil...

Sehinggalah ayahnya pulang.

Teringat masa ni, badan dia sangat mantap. Mencecah setahun berat badan dia 12 kg. Bam-bam... pipi pun labuh.

Adam pula anak ibu, malah rapat pula dengan maktok (ibu saya). Sekitar 9 malam dah ajak masuk bilik.

Adam lahir comel-comel saja. Di bawah 3 kg, tidak seperti Mastura ~ 3.4 kg. Tapi bila mencecah setahun beratnya 12 kg juga. Sama seperti kakaknya.

Syafiah in action!

We went to a water cascade on last Saturday to try Syafiah's neck float on her in a larger space. We brought along my mom who followed us back last week. I love the waterfall more than a swimming pool as it has no chlorine. We'd find more natural places for sure, be it waterfalls, beaches or even hot springs since she wasn't afraid to try new things. Next in mind is Sg Klah, Sungkai. Read a review here. Even on the way back home, we tried the opposite way, on which we found another hot spring named Ulu Tamu at Batang Kali.

So, let's some photos do the talk. You can click on photos to enlarge them (all photos by my husband except the first one):

She's floating, she's happy, she's adapting herself very well. She kept kicking both of her feet in the water. Almost all the time. Sometimes to left side, sometimes to the right. It made her moving in round and even backward. I just had to make sure that I stood the opposite way of the stream to avoid her from being washed away.

One positive response ~ she kept on talking in her language & giggling in the car after the activity, until Mastura asked her to stop as she wanted to sleep. The way I look at it, the stimulation is working on her. Even when I type this, she's accompanying me. She keeps on talking with different pronunciation.

The place we went called Ulu Yam. The nearest waterfall from our place. The upgrading work is in progress. New stalls are in place even though they're not fully operated yet. New changing rooms and washrooms too; to replace the old bad ones. Even though the weather is a bit hot now, the water remains cold. We performed the Asar prayer before we went home. The surau reminds me of 'rumah kebun' that once we had we're younger. Spacious wooden house. I just love to be in there.

A Journey Of A Thousand Steps Begins With A Single Step

The flower girl in a flower neck float, and yes... this was her 1st swimming lesson:

I'm sorry, daughter, for the place is too small for you. You could fit in it nicely, but I'm not satisfy as I couldn't see your legs. You were acting good though you turned on your voice very high. You didn't cry, that's a good sign indeed. You didn't seem afraid to try a new thing. I'd buy you another bigger pool or may be we can spend some quality times at swimming pool or even waterfalls. But still, it was a good start to build your confidence first to be in the water without our supports. We started from small to big, will ya?

Yeah... I'm sorry too as I didn't buy a camera without a video function in it. If not, I can record your movements like this - the moment you feel happy and anxious, when you're kicking your feet high into the air. I've to wait for 3 years to buy this camera. I'm sure I can wait for 7D for next few years or when I have enough money to pass this to someone else. Or may be I can pass this to you! I hope one day, you can grab this and click it just like your mother.

Neck float

After reading here and there about neck float, we finally bought it yesterday for Syafiah but we haven't had the chance to wear it on her. We bought this at Toys R Us which is more expensive than buying it online (we're not the online shoppers). RM70 vs RM40. I can't wait to give her a try as she just loves to be in the water! And no, we didn't buy the pool as we already have a 'pool' for her at home. We also bought a play house for her brother and sister.

Previously Adam has asthmatic symptoms. Whenever he played excitedly, he would hardly breathe & wheezed whenever he fell sick. He was admitted into the ward when he was 9 months old, being nebulized for few times/day for 3 days. After that we brought him to waterfalls. Almost every weekend we'd bring him to his 'water therapy' as well as a therapy for us as we could see the green. He's good at coordination & balancing his body. He could walk at the age of 11 months & could talk earlier than his sister. There's no more sign of asthma. The symptoms have disappeared until today.

Researchers have documented that the stimulating effect of child-paced infant/toddler swimming lessons has the potential to increase intelligence, concentration, alertness, and perceptual abilities. Improvement in social, emotional and physical development has also been published. Of course, the manifestation of such inspired cognitive, personal and motor development takes time, patience and repetition. It improves coordination, strength, endurance and lung capacity.

This was Syafiah when we first brought her to a waterfall:

She kept splashing her hand on the water!

Here is a good article on 'Swimming with your baby' by babycenter. A part of its contents:

Getting your baby used to water early is important from a safety point of view and it's great fun too. "Your child won't be co-ordinated enough to learn to swim properly until he is two or three, but you can get him to feel confident and relaxed in the water and make swimming a fun way to exercise for both of you," says midwife and health visitor Julia Youll.

When can I start swimming with my baby?

Parents used to be advised to wait until their baby had had their immunisations at two, three and four months before they took their babies swimming. But government health experts no longer believe this is necessary, so it's really up to you when you start taking your baby to the pool. "There are no medical grounds for waiting until your baby is immunised. However, most pools start classes at around 12 weeks," says Libby Tucker, a swimming teacher who specialises in parent and child courses. Remember too, that a noisy public swimming pool could be daunting for your newborn, so it may be worth waiting until he's a bit older. You will probably have to wait until you've had your six-week check before you can go yourself, anyway.

How I made peace with having a kid who has special needs

Ken, a really thoughtful (and funny) writer over at Blogzilly who's dad to Bennett, wrote a comment yesterday that really moved me. It was in response to my flip post on what Max would say if he had more words. Ken wrote:

"I hope to be where you are someday. In my present state of mind I would be focusing on what my son can't say. Your post shows there is hope to be in a better place and instead have some fun with it and be in a better place."

This is something I've been meaning to talk about. Because here's the thing: I know I seem pretty well-adjusted. I am. I know I seem pretty upbeat. I am...now. If I had started this blog when Max was first born, or even a couple years later, this would be a very, very different blog. It would be a blog filled with worry, hand-wringing, and all sorts of dark thoughts. To some extent, it's taken the passage of time for me to get to this better place, but along the way I happened upon some things that helped:

• I talked about my worries and my grief. With friends, with other parents of kids with special needs, with people in support groups, with a therapist. Now we have blogs, but there's nothing like having a real conversation to get the trauma out.

*only I don't talk much on my worries and my grief. I usually answer properly to people's questions and it heals me a lot by sharing the information. I read a lot too.

• I found ways to savor Max. I've written before about how my fears for Max's future would sometimes overshadow the fact that I had a really cute, delicious baby. So I got into taking photos of him. Lots of photos. I'd order prints and meticulously put them in photo albums. I made photo murals and hung them around the house. I'd order photo calendars of Max for Dave and family. I had a photo gallery of Max in my office. The photos brought in the joy of having a child, the joy that can get so easily squashed by all the medical drama.

• I'd make myself remember that as sorry as I felt for Max, he wasn't feeling sorry for himself. He was perfectly content. He didn't know that he was having trouble picking up the toy car because his hands were tight from the cerebral palsy; he just knew to keep trying.

• I'd think about how much worse things could have been. This was a total shift in perspective, because for the longest time all I could think was, Why did this happen to us? Why am I the only one out of everyone we know to have a child who suffered such a catastrophe at birth? But when I'd consider far more awful things that could have happened, I'd suddenly feel a lot better about the present.

• I put together the best team of experts I could find. I researched doctors and talked my way into appointments, shamelessly throwing myself at the mercy of secretaries. I made sure Max had experienced Early Intervention therapists. If someone wasn't working out, I'd go to bat to find a replacement. I fought the insurance company to pay for more therapies. And we tried alternate stuff, too, like craniosacral therapy and hyperbaric oxygen treatment. I was determined to give Max every possible chance at succeeding in life. Taking action was helpful for me, too; I felt like I had some control over a situation that seemed wildly, and scarily, uncontrollable.

I didn't beat myself up. Between all the therapeutic exercises experts gave us, I could have spent 24/7 working with Max. I did my best, and I refused to feel guilty about not being able to do every single thing. Putting all that pressure on myself would have only made me more stressed, and that wouldn't have done Max any good.

• I forced myself to quit paying attention to major milestones. No more looking at the developmental books, no more updates from BabyCenter. I was only torturing myself by comparing what Max should have been doing with the reality of his delays.

*I stopped comparing her with her colleagues too. Another special kid can do this and that.. bla bla bla.. yadda yadda... yes, shoo shoo STRESS! I won't let the emotion controls me either.

I learned to celebrate small, everyday achievements.

I also learned to hunt down the happiness. If I was bummed out, I'd get in touch with one of Max's therapists and talk about the good things he'd been doing. That always gave me a lift. A little wine never hurt, either.

I finally got to acceptance. It came excruciatingly slowly because it kept head-butting with hope—my hope that Max would completely prove the doctors in the NICU wrong. As time went on, and it was clear Max had challenges, I readjusted my hopes. I was no longer looking for the miracle; I just really and truly hoped that Max would keep on improving. And he has. As our saint of a neurologist has always said, "Don't look at books, don't look at medical records, don't look at charts. Look at your child, and what he's doing."

And so, that's pretty much how I have gotten to this place. If you regularly read this blog, you know I still have the sad moments. I cry on occasion, including when I write posts like this that take me back to the early years. I still have a streak of denial; I have Photoshopped the drool out of photos. I have freakouts about Max's future. But I have come a long way, both in years and in my mind. I've learned. I've adapted. I've adjusted. I no longer see myself as a person who had a really horrible thing happen to her; I no longer see Max as a poor, unfortunate child.

I am a mom of a very wonderful kid who has some challenges, a kid whose smile heals me every single day.

If you have any words of advice to add, or you have a question you'd like to ask, please do.

And this is what happened when I didn't beat myself up; when I refused to feel guilty about not being able to do every single thing:

She could hold her feeding bottle properly. Sometimes with both hands, without a pillow support.

And finally, thanks Ellen for a great post that lifted up my spirit!

Tentang Syafiah & Ramadhan

Lama tak mencoret sesuatu di sini. Bukannya lupa. Tapi menulis sangat memerlukan masa. Time consuming.

3) Dia sememangnya makin meninggi. Berat juga agak menggalakkan. Minum susu 8 oz/sesi.

Seminit dua berjalan kaki pun dah sampai. Tapi kami tidak singgah ke sana.

Iftar kami semalam - kuih cara manis buatan sendiri, kurma dan air kosong.

Sekali lagi ~ kembalilah kepada kehidupan yang SEDERHANA. Bukan atas dasar kebendaan semata-mata.
